Brookhaven VFW post having open house this Saturday
Brookhaven’s Daniel Day Entrican Post 2618 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars is having a free shindig this Saturday, Oct. 15, at its Brookhaven headquarters, and you’re invited.
The open house and community outreach program begins at 10 a.m. and lasts until 3 p.m. at the post at 728 Industrial Park Road (look for the tank). They will be selling pulled pork sandwiches with all the sides for lunch, giving away door prizes and selling raffle tickets, with the top raffle prize being a Ruger Hawkeye rifle in .30-06 (no joke, this is a $1,000 rifle).
The Brookhaven Fire Department will perform some demonstrations for Fire Safety Month, and there will also be a kids zone with inflatable fun jumps and other activities for the small humans (like face-painting), so bring the family and make a day of it.
Equally important: the local VFW service officer will be on-hand to answer questions about the VFW’s mission and services, as well as coordinate with any veterans who may wish to become VFW members. Donations will be taken for Wreaths Across America, one of the major organizations the VFW supports, and information and applications for veterans’ memorial bricks around the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Government Complex will be available.
So, yeah: five hours of BBQ, deserts, a raffle, fun jumps, fire trucks… this will be a good event for a lazy Saturday (with plenty of time for football, because Mississippi State is going to get hosed by the Mormons on Friday night and Ole Miss doesn’t play Saturday until 6 p.m.).
