Brookhaven’s Camellia show is this weekend and you should go
February: the month of broken hearts and dead, dead grass. The air is cold (comparatively) and nothing is in bloom.
Nothing, except the camellia.
And nobody makes a bigger deal about the camellia than Brookhaven and its old and honorable Brookhaven Camellia Society. You can see for yourself this weekend at the 53rd annual Brookhaven Camellia Show.
Mississippi’s coolest flower show goes down on Saturday at the Brookhaven Recreation Department on Highway 51. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. If you’re a serious grower (or, like me, you just happen to have a camellia growing in your yard) you can enter your blooms into the contest from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. There is a special category for Lincoln County growers and prizes to be awarded.
And if you’re not into camellias, you can get into them real easy. There will be camellia plants for sale at the show.
The Brookhaven Camellia show is no delicate flower: serious growers from all over the southeast and eastern United States will be in town for the show, which has serious roots in the national – and even international – camellia fellowship.
The blooms on display at this show will plentiful, colorful and beautiful. Go check it out.
